This ensemble is the foundation of choral ministry at Christ Church, for adults and high school students who are able to maintain a commitment to the weekly regimen of rehearsals and singing for the 10:30 am Sunday services, with occasional extra services and concerts.
Prospective members are encouraged to arrange for a visit to a rehearsal and an interview with the director. A brief audition is a part of the interview in order for the director to place a new singer in the optimum seating assignment.
Rehearsals are Thursday evenings, September through June, 7:15 to 9:45 with a break for community news and conversation. Sunday morning rehearsals are held normally from 9:40 to 10:15, with earlier start times during the busy seasons. With advanced notice, extra sectional rehearsals and dress rehearsals are scheduled on occasion, to prepare for concerts and for the more elaborate liturgical celebrations.
A typical choir season from September through July normally consists of a few concerts, or musical services such as Evensong and/or Lessons & Carols, elaborate Christmas Eve musical offerings, and extended liturgical music for Holy Week and Easter. Typical Sunday worship includes one or two anthems, often a Psalm setting in a variety of styles, and brief responses in the liturgical action (after the Benediction and especially for Communion). Due to the large quantity of choral music from week to week and for special events, the Chancel Choir relies on music learned over the years as well as one or two new works learned each month.
This choir is known regionally for diversity of musical offerings; all styles of music, ancient and modern, are considered appropriate for worship if they are of high artistic quality and worthy of the excellence that we delight in offering to God. In early May, 2008, the Chancel Choir was one of six selected by recorded audition from seven northern Ohio counties to participate in the WCLV / UCC Choral Challenge. This was the first annual competition for church choirs in an effort to promote a high standard of excellent and diverse sacred choral music.
Locally, the choir can be heard on AM radio station, WHLO 640, on Sunday mornings for the live broadcast of the 10:30 service, and often the station will play recordings of the choir well before and after the actual service itself.
The Chancel Choir is under the training and direction of David J. Kienzle.
Choir President, Bert Smith, assists the music director with non-musical aspects of the organization; Alice Rauch is our dedicated Choir Librarian; other choir officers are Pete Bate, vice president; Carol Orin, secretary/treasurer.
